Light has been a vital element of art since the beginning. Early renaissance painters turned to techniques such as chiaroscuro to make their paintings come to life. Light also holds the forefront of photography. From exposing objects onto light sensitive paper, to keeping negatives safely away from light sources, light is always on the mind of an artist. It could even be argued that emphasis on light and shadow is often more important than the actual scene being depicted. To explore this concept, I have photographed these configurations to show the beauty that nature is able to create hand in hand with human creations, while also capturing a moment in time and preserving something that will change. If I returned to these locations on a different day, these photographs would look entirely different. In this work, the natural lighting is what many notice first while the background is absorbed by deep shadows. It is then the job of the viewer to observe what else is included in the scene.
